Genealogy 101: Follow General Interview Guidelines
egardless of who you are interviewing, there are a few general tips to keep in mind.
The following will help you make the most of your time:
- Prepare a list of questions prior to the interview.
- Use open-ended questions.
- Listen to responses. Do not interrupt.
- Take notes. Use audio recorders where appropriate.
- Ask follow-up questions. Stray from your list of questions when needed.
- Be considerate. Some sensitive issues may bring back memories. If the interviewee does want to answer, don't press.
- Set a general time limit. One to two hours is about right for most interviews.
- Be courteous. Write a thank-you note, and offer to share what you find.
